Combined Cooling Heat and Power Belfast & Northern Ireland

BSH Limited designs combined cooling heat and power (trigeneration) plant that integrates on-site electricity generation with heating and absorption chilling through pre-packaged construction.

Combined Cooling Heat and Power Belfast reflects BSH Limited's trigeneration capability across commercial and industrial buildings. BSH designs combination fuelled systems that include heating, cooling, combined heat and power, domestic and control systems, and combined cooling heat and power — or trigeneration — is the extension of CHP to include cooling from the same fuel source.

Trigeneration generates electricity on site, captures the heat produced for space heating, hot water or process loads, and uses any remaining recovered heat to drive absorption chilling for the building's cooling demand. Because all three outputs come from one fuel source, the recovered heat is used rather than wasted, which is what delivers the efficiency rather than the generator simply running.

BSH holds the accolade for the largest trigeneration plant room in Europe in 2012, designed and built for Tesco in Naas, Co. Kildare, Ireland, reflecting the depth behind that integrated cooling, heat and power approach.

Three outputs from one fuel source

Combined cooling heat and power generates electricity on site and captures the heat produced, then uses the recovered heat to drive absorption chilling for the cooling load as well as for heating and hot water. Yazaki absorption chilling primarily utilises heat as its main power source, so the cooling is served by the CHP's recovered heat rather than by separate electric chillers — which is what makes trigeneration a low-carbon cooling option.

Sized against simultaneous loads

Trigeneration only saves energy when its electricity, heat and cooling are all useful together, so BSH sizes the plant against the building's simultaneous heat, power and cooling demand rather than as a standalone generator. The plant runs usefully loaded and the recovered heat is actually used for heating and for cooling, which is what delivers the efficiency rather than the unit simply running.

Delivered through plantrooms

Where the trigeneration plant is delivered through a pre-packaged plantroom, the generation, pumps, heat distribution, absorption chiller and controls are assembled and inspected off site before delivery as a plug and power solution. That off-site fabrication reduces on-site downtime and keeps the cooling, heat and power integrated from the outset, with the largest plug and power plantroom in terms of power at 1.4Mw thermal.

How BSH can help

Problem

A building that buys grid electricity, generates heat separately and runs electric chillers for cooling pays three times for what one trigeneration plant could supply, and wastes the heat released during power generation. CHP installed without a use for its recovered heat, or cooling procured as a standalone electric load, loses the trigeneration opportunity at the interface between the systems.

Reaction

Splitting generation, heating and cooling into separate procured packages raises running cost and carbon, and can leave a building with a generator that vents its recovered heat while electric chillers meet the cooling load. Consultants and facilities managers need an engineering partner who designs the three as one combination fuelled system, using the recovered heat for both heating and cooling.
