Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology Belfast & Northern Ireland

BSH Limited works with the Penta hydrogen fuel cell system and includes fuel cell, co- and trigeneration systems among its consultancy specialisms, as part of its future-fuels research.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology Belfast reflects BSH Limited's research and development work on hydrogen as a future fuel. BSH's documented hydrogen programme includes the Penta hydrogen fuel cell system, alongside bespoke electrolyser power systems and fuel cell, co- and trigeneration systems listed among the company's consultancy specialisms.

A hydrogen fuel cell converts hydrogen and oxygen into electricity, with heat as a by-product. Where that heat is recovered and put to use, the fuel cell can form part of a co-generation (CHP) or trigeneration arrangement producing electricity, heat and cooling from a single fuel input. BSH's consultancy specialisms include fuel cell, co- and trigeneration systems, so the technology is considered within the wider energy system.

BSH's hydrogen work also includes electrochemical hydrogen compression and the company's collaboration on a hydrogen-to-power demonstration at Mid & East Antrim, so fuel cell technology is presented as part of an ongoing research and future-fuels programme rather than as a fully commercialised, off-the-shelf product.

The Penta hydrogen fuel cell system

BSH's documented hydrogen programme includes the Penta hydrogen fuel cell system. A fuel cell generates electricity from hydrogen electrochemically, with heat produced as a by-product; where that heat is recovered for heating or — through absorption chilling — cooling, the arrangement becomes co-generation or trigeneration. BSH's consultancy specialisms include fuel cell, co- and trigeneration systems.

Fuel cells within co- and trigeneration

Because a fuel cell produces electricity and heat simultaneously, integrating the heat into a building's heating or cooling loads turns the fuel cell into a co-generation system. Where recovered heat drives an absorption chiller to produce cooling, the arrangement becomes trigeneration — electricity, heat and cooling from one fuel input. BSH designed and built the largest trigeneration plant room in Europe in 2012, for Tesco in Naas.

Research, development and collaboration

BSH's hydrogen programme is research and development led, including collaboration on a hydrogen-to-power demonstration at Mid & East Antrim and electrochemical hydrogen compression. Fuel cell technology is presented within that ongoing future-fuels work rather than as a fully deployed commercial product, reflecting the distinction between established heating capability and developing technologies.

How BSH can help

Problem

Organisations researching or planning hydrogen-to-power need a partner who can treat the fuel cell as part of an energy system — electricity, heat and, through absorption chilling, cooling — rather than as an isolated generator. Where fuel cell work is separated from hydrogen production (electrolysers), compression and the heating or cooling loads it serves, the integration that makes hydrogen energy systems work is lost.

Reaction

Fuel cell projects that treat the unit only as an electricity source forfeit the value of the heat by-product and the efficiency of co- or trigeneration. Research and development programmes need an engineering partner who understands hydrogen fuel cells alongside the wider hydrogen and plantroom capability — electrolysers, compression, absorption chilling and combination fuelled systems — so the technology is evaluated as part of a whole energy system.

Solution

BSH works with the Penta hydrogen fuel cell system and includes fuel cell, co- and trigeneration systems among its consultancy specialisms, as part of a future-fuels research programme that also covers bespoke electrolyser power systems and electrochemical hydrogen compression. Because fuel cell integration depends on the building's loads and hydrogen supply, the next step is to discuss your requirements with BSH's engineers.
